I did read the unabridged version years ago which was over 1400 pages, and I want to say that a sizeable portion of the difference is Hugo’s retelling of the Battle of Waterloo. After the fall of the Second Empire in 1870, Hugo returned to France and was reelected to the National Assembly, and then to the Senate. Right now you can get the abridged edition of Les Miserables for FREE on Amazon. In these same years he produced the novels Les Misrables (1862), Toilers of the Sea (1866), The Man Who Laughs (1869), and Ninety-Three (1873). Les Miserables by French author Victor Hugo was first published in 1862, and is considered one of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century.
